Week 2- Technical Exercise

I used basic shapes and materials to test things out before importing more sophisticated objects from another project.

I spent quite some time getting use to Unreal Engine’s interface and how to navigate in 3D settings. For example, some bushes I planted looked fine from the front but when I turned to the side it was completely flat and therefore had to adjust its depth.

VR Experiences:

1. VRChat

This is a pretty cool experience for me! I thought it’s just a virtual chatroom with an interface to type to random people but it felt like an actual space where people hang out. Brought the socially anxious side of me out a little bit because it felt like I randomly went to a party without knowing anyone. The avatars are not the best looking and the space/rooms can definitely be a bit more visually appeal for sure. And the way you navigate is to have your avatar walking towards where you indicate, and that felt really strange (kind of like seeing your soul coming out of your body).

2. The Lab

I basically just stood at where I was turning around for 5 minutes without knowing what I can do or what I should do. I saw the cute robot dog and I wanted to follow it but I couldn’t move. I tried pushing all the buttons, walking around physically, stretching my arms out, but nothing worked.

Afterwards I was chatting with another classmate and realized that there were different crystal balls for different tasks and we can teleport to different scenes through those balls. There were any visual cues (or at least not obvious enough for me to notice) and that limited my experience in that game greatly.
