week 5 – Story Development

New Storyline

I changed my story and decided to just focus on the park scene instead of multiple scenes. The new story is going to be a grandpa taking his grandson to the park. The kid runs around, explores the nature, and plays with butterflies and flowers. He then makes flower crowns for his grandpa and himself so that they can match. He puts the flower crown on his grandpa’s head as the grandpa looks at all these lovingly.

The audience will experience the story as a ghost with no impact because I want to show the cute family interaction between a grandpa and his grandson with no interruption.

I used Blocks to create my characters and I love the programme so much!! I’m terrible at drawing so Blocks saved me. It’s also really fun to just play around and see how to create things with the simplest shapes.

Butterfly Blueprint

I played around with sequencer for my butterflies. It’s pretty intuitive and easy since I used PhotoShop timeline to create GIF ALL THE TIME before so it’s pretty much the same interface. I only played around with the location so far and haven’t explored the other functions so I’m sure there’ll be more things I can do with it.

But then I got lazy to animate each butterfly to have them fly randomly so I asked Todd if there’s a way to write that into my butterfly blueprint and randomize the movement. Todd showed me how to set oscillate and apply a random float range (on the Z value because for some weird reasons the Z value represent up and down movement instead of Y) so that I can change the location of each of the butterflies.

I was a bit annoyed by importing my Blocks assets into Unreal because all the colours were off and I had too go back and change each colour individually. But at the same time it’s really cool to use things I made in VR so I guess I should whine about it.

I also played around with sequencer. It’s pretty intuitive and easy to use. I used timeline in PhotoShop to create GIF ALL THE TIME before so it’s pretty much the same interface. The next step will be creating the grandson character and animate him so that he can run towards his grandpa and puts the flower crown on his head.
