Week 6 – Midterm

Initial Idea

I was initially going to create a parallel universe with 3 different spaces that the players can experience to later figure who their characters are based ono the interactions. But it’s too complicated and the interactions would be too advanced for me at this time, so I downscaled my idea to just focus on the park scene. I decided to turn this interaction VR experience into something that’s a bit like Henry so that the player is watching a scene in front of them.

I also thought about having the player to just be a ghost in this story with no influence but I decided last minute that the player should be placed in the park as well so that it feels like you’re there.

But one problem that I face is how can i restrict the player to just sit and watch instead of stand up and start moving around? Because I only know how to attach a body to the pawn right now. I decided that for now I’ll just tell the player that this is a seated experience.

I also ran into a bunch of problems at the beginning. I first uploaded my character on Mixamo as the .fbx file (because I didn’t know you can upload a zipped file) so my character only has the skeleton without colours. I naively thought that I can create the animation and then just apply the colours or drop in the correct characters later on. But nope that’s not how it worked so I had to do everything all over again (uploading character in Mixamo, downloading animation, scaling the character in UE4, create the animation).

Future Improvement

I’d like to spend some time to figure out how to attach a semi moveable/interactive body to the pawn so that the player can move around and have the body correspond to the movement in real time.

I also need to research out to keep the transformation state at the end of the animation because currently it’s not doing anything so when the video ends the character will just jump back to the beginning pose (the T-pose).

And I think I’d add more characters just hanging out in the space so that it feels more like a park.
