Week 7 – VR Experiences

Midterm Experience in VR

Ummm so my head is not on my body. I attached a body to the camera hoping that it’ll make the player feel like they are sitting in the park bench with the grandpa and the grandson. I wanted to copy what Neuro-Speculative Afrofeminism did so that the player can feel like they have a presence in the scene without moving too much.

But that didn’t work out for some reasons. It was pretty traumatizing seeing a headless body just hanging out in front of me when I entered the game immediately. But aside from the player view being too low on the ground and that there’s a headless body in front of me, I was really happy that the proportion of my characters, flowers, squirrels, and bushes are right and the sound I added really help create the ambience of the park.

I initially watched this on YouTube and move my cursor around to see what’s around. I really enjoyed the story and I think it’s really beautiful story about dreams, family, and friendships. I was a bit scared that there’ll be a car crash or something terrible happen throughout the film (because that’s what always happens when there’s a car scene in the movies) so I was really happy that didn’t happen.

I then went on and downloaded Google Spotlight Stories and watched it on my phone. One thing that I noticed for both experiences was that this story is designed and composed to be viewed in 360 degrees, but since I watched it through a single screen instead of being in an immersive environment, it was actually a bit annoying to have to constantly move my phone/cursor around to see if I’ve missed anything and that distracted me from what was happening a little bit.

Robo Recall

2

This is officially one of my favourite games! The instruction was clear and the game itself is just so much fun! I did it alone in the room and I found myself swearing and moving and screaming because it felt so real. It felt like the robots were really about to jump on me so I panic fired while screaming. Good that no one else was there. And I can’t aim.

Fun House VR

3

This is really fun too! Very carnival-y and I felt like a child again. I was a bit confused as to what I was suppose to do when I first entered the game, and then I found the instructions. And then I got confused again and wasn’t sure how I could get to another booth so I tried to move around but nothing happened. I later realized that I had to press the button to go to “next level.” I think it would be interesting if we could freely move around different tents to play games instead of pressing a button to go to another game. But I guess that’ll require too much space for the players to move around. Maybe we can do teleporting?

Cosmic Sugar

I’m always fascinated by the universe and actually took a class in college learning about stars, planets, and other cool stuff that happens in the universe. This experience was really interesting as it also incorporates sounds as you form/create new nebulas. This would have made the undergrad class I took even more interesting.

That Dragon Cancer

unnamed

This is definitely a piece that I did not expect. I was a bit confused about what is happening when I first started, and then I realized the story behind it and it got emotional. My initial thoughts were why would this be a video game?? Isn’t it a little bit weird to gamify such a personal experience? But then I thought that having the players engage in the experience in small pieces instead of watching a full length film was actually kind of great to really bring the players into this journey. However, at times I wasn’t clear about what I was supposed to do and was confused.
